Public rejects State of the Union Message and states that it doesn't trust him
I am just writing this diary because I don't understand what the problem is. It isn't my intent to depress enthusiasm or push any type of agenda at all. I'm just very disheartened.
Like many of you, I'm sure that you were thrilled the past 3 days with:
- The GDF figure soaring 5.7%, which was higher than many economists even imagined. The economy is back.
- The inspiring S.O.T.U. message that took on partisanship and the GOP and outlined a bold plan to create jobs.
- The smackdown of epic proportions that the President delivered to the GOP caucus yesterday.
Apparently though, the public is not impressed. I'm just wondering. Do you think that President Obama, to put it into simple terms, is like an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend trying to get his ex-lover to take him back? The lover no longer trusts him and won't listen to anything that he says?
The evidence seems to be that is the case based on this:

The president's approval rating crashed to a Gallup career low today of 47-47. I wasn't expecting this after a well-received S.O.T.U and GOP smackdown. Shouldn't his approval ratings have gone up after a major address? Even Bush went up a bit in 2005 after his Iraq addresses, etc.

Deficit of Trust: Most Voters Don’t Believe President’s Assertions About Economy

During his State-of-the-Union address Wednesday night, President Obama spoke about a deficit of trust between the American people and political leaders. New Rasmussen Reports polling on the president’s speech shows just how deep that trust deficit has become.
The president in the speech declared that his administration has cut taxes for 95% of Americans. He even chided Republicans for not applauding on that point. However, just 21% of voters nationwide believe that taxes have been cut for 95% of Americans. Most (53%) say it has not happened, and 26% are not sure. Other polling shows that nearly half the nation’s voters expect their own taxes to go up during the Obama years.
The president also asserted that "after two years of recession, the economy is growing again." Just 35% of voters believe that statement is true, while 50% say it is false.
Obama claimed that steps taken by his team are responsible for putting two million people to work "who would otherwise be unemployed." Just 27% of voters say that statement is true. Fifty-one percent (51%) say it's false.
It’s likely that the president recognized public opinion on these points and is beginning an effort to sway that opinion. Polling conducted in the nights following his speech indicate that enthusiasm for the president among Democrats has increased.
I hate consistently writing negative diaries but there's been ZERO good news lately and what I thought was awesome news evidently isn't.
I wouldn't be posting right-wing Rasmussen except Gallup today pretty much confirms it. The R2K poll quite frankly is not credible given that it was like 8 points off in the MA senate race.
What's the problem here? Am I over-reacting? Has the president been tuned out? Is there anything that he can do? I just need some hope? If a SOTU can't even provide a temporary bounce and actually results in a negative bounce, where do we go from here?
