Much of the opposition to health care reform on the right is by individuals who have neither read the bills nor understand the bills. Pick almost any small town newspaper and you will see arguments like:
*Canadians have to wait forever! You don't want that, do you?
*I'm tired of welfare recipients / illegal immigrants taking my tax dollars!
*DEATH PANELS!
Not sure what those things have to do with the bills actually passed by the House and Senate? Nor do I. But check a small town paper and you are sure to find such claims in the online comments or Letters to the Editor.
So what to do about this?
I think we need to start a digital door-knocking campaign. Pick a small town, one that you may have some connection to, and then find their online newspaper. Then start conversing with the commenters. Anytime a lie about HCR is brought up, take it down in a respectful manner.
I suggest small town papers because (1) it is generally easier for you to get a letter published there (if you so choose) than in a major city's newspaper, and (2) there are generally fewer comments so your work carries more impact. Also, the only reason the GOP is still hanging on is because our congressional districts over represent rural and small town America -- so this helps take the HCR to the source. In fact, when considering which small town paper to adopt, you may want to look at districts currently held by Republicans.
Just remember to be respectful, have fun, and report back how it goes!
