In a blow to the house of cards that the president and his ardent supporters have set up regarding why legalized bigotry against gays should continue, the DOJ declined this week to appeal a case involving a Christian organization wanting to proselytize in federal parks.
Apparently, some of us are more equal than others. This situation actually brings up a larger issue that I have with the president and some of the supporters. The tendency to say one thing, and do another.
Even if I were to accept the zombie lie that the president must defend all cases it loses at the district court level, that argument is thrown out the window when the president chooses to ignore his own position when it suits him.
The obvious answer staring us in the face at this point is that the president is okay with legalized bigotry against one group while he's not okay with denying rights of others. Apparently Christians are worth more than gays when it comes to rights under the U.S. constitution.
The case involves the following:
"It was a bureaucratic nightmare," said Nate Kellum, senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, a nonprofit Christian legal defense group. "He was completely stymied from sharing his Christian views with anybody else." The case "establishes that national parks are no different than any other public park," Kellum said. "There's no distinction now between Mount Rushmore and the city park down the street." Groups of 25 or fewer people may now demonstrate or distribute or sell printed material in designated areas of national parks and historic sites without a permit, according to interim regulations to be published soon in the Federal Register."

Compare the "horror" of not being able to force others into listening to your religious beliefs in a federal park versus completely denying someone who they are by giving them "choice" between serving their country by lying about who they are or being discharged.
I agree with this statement:
"...This contradiction is simply incomprehensible and insulting," said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United..."
Meanwhile, the apologists for bigotry continue to use these arguments despite their obvious falsehood as far as the Obama DOJ's own actions are concerned.
The problem with these falsehoods is not just that it allows bigotry to continue without any reason for it other than fear of an unlikely backlash. The problem with these falsehoods is that they are hurtful to the morale of the base as well as to gay people. It says to us that you can lie to us as well as treat us unequally. If we are unwilling to buy into the untruths, you then call us whiners and other names. None of this is acceptable. Anyone engaging in this zombie lie should be ashamed of yourself. At the very least, say you don't consider us equal to our face rather than through zombie lies.
