With 56% of the vote in as I write this,
Antonio Villaraigosa is cruising to a landslide victory over Mayor Jim Hahn with almost a 20% lead. According to the exit polls, Villaraigosa won every geographic area of the city and every major ethnic group except Asians.
The City of Los Angeles, so often divided and unable to come together on anything, have decided upon one thing that they all can come together and agree on: they don't like Jim Hahn.
So with these numbers coming out, what does James Hahn do? He gives a speech praising his own administration and then announces it's going to be a long night and goes home without conceding.
Long night? I guess it will be a long night for him and his supporters. It's one thing to do that if the election is within one or two percentage points, but twenty? Does he really think he's going to get 90% of the remaining votes?
Hahn, in praising himself, went on about how crime is down and jobs are up in LA. Yet the people of LA decided they wanted Hahn gone in huge numbers. If Jim Hahn wonders why people voted him out, he should realize that the lack of class he showed tonight was indicative of the lack of class he showed throughout his whole administration. People just didn't like him, and behavior like this is a big reason why.
