There is no Democrat running against the Republican Congressman in my District. In spite of that, I will vote today.
Every commercial break on every TV program includes negative, expen$ive and generally counterproductive advertising. In spite of that, I will vote today.
The Democrat in my US Senate race Democrat is polling in the low 20's and his presence on the ballot will probably help elect a truly despicable man. In spite of that, I will vote today.
In this time of public distrust of bankers, the Democratic candidate for my Governor built a career running Bank of America in Florida. In spite of that, I will vote today.
And even though my wife and I are "super voters" who contribute to campaigns regularly, not a single person has knocked on my door (from either party, for any candidate or cause), not a single (live) person has called my home to advocate for a candidate or cause. In spite of that, I will vote today.
I'm an informed voter. I seek out information on candidates and causes and then pass that information on to friends and family (with annoying advocacy). So I will vote, because I don't know how to NOT vote.
But if I were more like most of my neighbors and colleagues, I probably wouldn't bother. My Party hasn't given me much reason to get excited about voting FOR anyone. The candidates on both sides are in a race to the bottom with negative advertising spending. And I suppose because they've spent so much time raising and spending such unprecedented money, the campaigns feel as if they don't need to knock on doors anymore. After all, they've already sent me five or six emails this morning - why bother to actually TALK to me?
Sure, there are campaign events. If a voter chooses to go where the candidates are, the campaigns will be happy to talk to them. But the campaigns going where the voters are? Please. Not in this shiny new decade, thanks.
My plea, regardless of what happens over the next few days, is that the Florida Democratic Party - and the DNC - find me somebody I can get excited about voting FOR. Please.
Thanks for reading this far. Now, Official Party Activists, flame on - but don't be surprised if it takes me a little time to respond, because in spite of you, I'll be busy voting.
