Ah, the Onion. Sometimes I really think you ARE America's finest news source. You don't pull any punches, that's for sure!
Of course, that story is meant to be a joke. But like all good jokes, it is born from a germ of truth.
I believe that liberals have allowed conservatives to define the terms of American political debate for far too long. We have let them turn "liberal" into a bad word. We have let them paint us as out of touch, pie-in-the-sky elitists. We have let them successfully make the conversation about race and guns and God and gay marriage and "family values" and "culture wars," when it should be about class and economic opportunity.
I have asked this before, but what the hell happened to the Democratic party? We used to be the party of FDR and JFK. We overcame a depression, defeated the Nazis, and stared down the Soviet Union. Now we let our strengths be turned into liabilities, and run from our accomplishments. How can we ask other people to believe in us if we don't even seem to believe in ourselves?
This is really less a diary than an exhausted rant. The Onion story is funny, for sure. But I laugh because if I don't I'll cry!
