Another accident waiting to happen?
The British government gives the go-ahead to resume deepwater drilling in British waters, according to the Guardian.
The decision to allow Chevron to begin drilling flew in the face of the US and EU, who argue it would be foolish to press ahead with deepwater drilling until the independent reports into the Gulf spill have been completed.
Controversy over the move deepened as it emerged that Chevron, a US oil firm, is planning to use the same contractor and safety equipment partly blamed by BP for the Gulf disaster. Chevron has brought in Halliburton to do the cementing and will use a Cameron blowout preventer on its planned well, west of Shetland.
The move was immediately condemned by Greenpeace, which was banned last week from any attempts to halt the Stena Carron, a drilling platform, from reaching its destination.
The Unified Area Command in its Friday, October 1 weekly updatereports that 20,642 personnel are currently active in Gulf Coast cleanup operations.
And it's an ill wind that blows no one good...the Biloxi Sun-Herald reports research money has begun to flow.
Two major types of research are taking place, and they often get confused by the public.
One involves basic inquiries into questions such as where the oil has gone and what it means for the ecosystem and public health. That is where BP has pledged to spend a half-billion dollars, with all findings to be made public.
The other type of research supports the federal government’s natural resource damage assessment, or NRDA, a part of the legal battle that eventually will determine how much money BP will pay.
And we're betting money can buy you... tourists? A boost from BP is ramping up hospitality programs on the Mississippi coast.
Summer wasn’t so good for tourism in South Mississippi, but fall is drawing a new crowd, lured by a full schedule of events and the $3 million BP has given the three Coast counties to promote them.
"Every event BP funded was put on steroids," said Beth Carriere, executive director of the Hancock County Tourism Development Bureau.
And New Orleans wants in on the windfall, too...
