I'm attending a party tonight so I can stay home and meet the little ghosts and goblins tomorrow night. I thought I'd let you know my plans for a costume and solicit advice, especially for signs.
My planned costume is the scariest thing I could think of - a Teaparty person. The costume will be blue jeans and a black T-shirt.
On the T-shirt over the heart is an apple with an angry green worm coming out of it, shaking its fist. Beneath the apple are the German words "Bad Apfel". On the back, in black shiny letters on the black shirt, are the words "Bite Me". I have political T-shirts, that I could have worn, but they're all about positive things, like three for Obama and one for the group Health Care for America Now. I would have to be explaining to everyone all night how I was a big Obama supporter but then he betrayed America and now he's a fascist socialist commie out to convert America to Islam. It's easier to not have to explain that forty times. My other patriotic shirts include a shirt with American flags and the signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, but that's been my usual Election day shirt, and with that just a couple days away, I don't want to mess with the mojo. The last possibility is a USS Constitution shirt from Boston where the ship is at anchor, but I'm really thinking the angry worm and "Bite Me" is more in keeping with the mood of the tea party, even though I'd love to explain while I love the Constitution there are lots of things I'd love to remove from it. Besides, the "Bite Me" T-shirt came from the estate of my aunt who was a female politician in Nevada - a die-hard Democrat. I think she'd smile down from where-ever she may be, if there is a place for her, to see this being worn in this manner.
The hat is the other article of clothing, if I can find it. I have my uncle's Korea War service baseball-style hat, to which is attached his purple heart. I'm going to dangle teabags from the rim of the cap. Again, he was a true Democrat, but in keeping with teabagger beliefs, I don't have to have served or earned that purple heart to proudly display them and be considered a war hero.
The final thing, and this is what I'm hoping to get suggestions for, are some signs for me to print out and take as a prop. What would you like to suggest for me? Thanks for your help.
Update - The Alaska Hat with the tea bags dangling from it was what everyone saw, and everyone got it immediately. I didn't receive any negative comments, and I did get a few conversations with people about how they're sick and tired of all the ads and the GOTV efforts - one woman said she had eleven voicemails on her phone one day when she got home, all from political campaigns.
I did print up a couple of sheets of paper which I attached to a clip board (which someone saw as being an effort to gather signatures, which I hadn't even thought of). My signs were 1 - "Taxed Enoungh Already" and 2 - "Government Keep Your Hands off my Medicare!" followed by "Don't Tred on Me". People also pointed out the typos, to which I replied that they wouldn't be proper Tea party signs if they didn't have typos. That brought knowing smiles.
In all, I think the group was fairly tired of the Tea party and the whole election and they appreciated the costume. We'll all be interested in the election being over and settled in just a couple of days (though I'm dreading the recounts).
