The momentum in the hotly contested race between Democrat Gary McDowell and Republican Dan Benishek for Michigan's 1st Congressional District has been on McDowell's side as of late. Though he entered the race trailing Benishek in the polls, McDowell has been closing the gap, and, this week, has pulled the race into a virtual dead heat.
The reason for McDowell's surge in the polls is that voters in this moderate district are learning more and more about Benishek's extreme right-wing views. Benishek rode a wave a tea-party support through the primary, but voters in the general election seem wary to support his agenda.
It comes as no surprise now that this week the major newspapers covering the 1st District have all come out in support of Gary McDowell.
The Bay City Times, in their endorsement, cited McDowell's work ethic and moderate stance on the issues.
"We think McDowell would be heard in Washington, as a voice of reason and as an advocate for the district."
The Traverse City Record-Eagle's endorsement noted McDowell's ability to work across the aisle.
"McDowell has promised to work across party lines and would better represent the district than multi-millionaire Dan Benishek, a Republican."
Even the Detroit Free Press, in their endorsements on races statewide, backed McDowell's campaign.
"A low-key, thoughtful leader with a farming background and a lifetime record of helping people, Gary McDowell is the better choice."
There's no question that Gary McDowell is the candidate with the ability to get the job done for Michigan's 1st District. We need all progressives and moderates to share these endorsements with friends and family in the district and remind them to cast their votes for Democrat Gary McDowell!
