Anyone notice how the current campaign climate has been rife with stories about crazy Republicans?
Has it escaped everyone how little coverage has been given to our Democratic candidates (some of whom are really good candidates)?
Well it's certainly been bugging the hell out of me lately and today in Huffington Post I made an attempt to voice my views on this detail. Follow me below the fold and I'll lay it out for you.
Lately, I've been complaining to my friends about how all the election coverage has been tilted towards the lunacy of the republican party. Huffington Post has been especially guilty of this trend and I've been finding myself increasingly frustrated by the omission of profiles about the democratic opponents of Sharron Angle, Michele Bachman, Joe Miller, et. al. So today, in yet another long article about Angle's insane points of views, I decided I'd had enough and posted this comment:
it's all well and good to laugh about all the "crazy republicans" who are dominating the news cycle but i find it pretty reprensible that the candidates who are representing our own side receive almost no press time at all.
we all know how loopy christine o'donnell is but are we getting any information at all on her democratic opponent chris coons?
rand paul is certainly entertaining (and scary) with all his totally out there opinions but why is jack conway covered so little?
michele bachman is always good for a belly laugh or 2 but why hasn't tarryl clark been covered here?
what about rodney glassman? a really good candidate who's runnig against mccain seems to also be absent here.
it'd be helpful if the democratic candidates also got some coverage here-i mean, HP is supposed to be a liberal-leaning blog but i've seen very little actual support in favor of our democratic candidates.
It's apparently a sensitive topic over at HP because within minutes (but not before I'd been marked as "favorable" 2 or 3 times and collected 2 fans) the comment was scrubbed and when I clicked the link to it in my profile pages I was treated to boldfaced writing informing me my comment had been deleted in accordance with HP guidelines.
So, I did what any other intrepid poster would do and copied the entire comment into a new comment box and re-posted it.
Again, marked favorable twice, another fan or 2 and bub-bye, you're outta here.
Whatevs. But this begs the question, what in the hell are the people at Huffington Post so afraid of? We have a rather outstanding slate of Democratid candidates and, for some reason, the folks over at Huffington Post doesn't seem to want to know anything about them. Yeah, I understand, loopiness makes better copy and HP wants to attract more readers and more advertisers but really! Does it have to be done to the detriment of our own principles and ideals? Does it have to be done at the expense of our own side?
This election is pretty scary for a lot of us since so many of the candidates on the Republican side are completely crazy and threaten to do considerable damage to this great nation. It's hard for me to believe that Arianna and her team over at HP truly want to see this happen but actions speak louder than words and HP's actions these days are little short of reprehensible.
I want to see the outcome of this election in our favor but I find it truly unnerving that a prominent voice that is claims to represent the liberal wing of politics showing so little support for its own side.
