The NC GOP opposes comprehensive sex ed, they try to amend the NC constitution every year to make being gay that much harder, and then they oppose anti-bully measures that can help avoid all the kinds of suicides that have been happening recently after they've helped create such conditions, and now they pile on with slurs like queer & fruitloops?
This is for the hateful NC GOP:

State Rep. Larry Brown sent his fellow House Republicans an e-mail last week where he referred to gays as "queers" and "fruitloops."
Brown was responding to an e-mail House Minority Leader Paul Stam of Apex sent to members of his caucus about House Speaker Joe Hackney getting an award from the Equality NC Foundation, a gay-rights group.
Brown sent his reply to nearly 60 e-mail addresses.
"I hope all the queers are thrilled to see him," said the message dated Sept. 27. "I am sure there will be a couple legislative fruitloops there in the audience."

Where the News & Observer gets it wrong, however, is in the details. Brown was hinting that some legislators are gay by calling them "fruitloops," not calling gays in general fruitloops. If you know anything about North Carolina politics, you know that the only legislators who attend the Equality NC gala will be Democrats.
Luckily NC has been a Democratic stronghold in the General Assembly for quite some time, but with national trends the way they are, we are at risk of losing it. We've been leaders in some ways, passed an LGBT inclusive anti-bully law, made moves towards comprehensive sex ed, stood alone in the south east with no anti-marriage equality constitutional amendment, were first in the south east to elect an openly gay elected official.
But all that is at risk now. Perhaps the single greatest thing we can do is support the Elaine Marshall for Senate campaign as the flagship Democratic campaign in NC this year.

Elaine believes it is not the Federal government’s job to discriminate, including when it comes to sexual orientation. She believes we should honor the commitment of those serving in the military regardless of sexual orientation, and that we should follow the lead of our military leaders and repeal "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell." Elaine supports the repeal of DOMA and the enactment of ENDA and UAFA. She supports eliminating all forms of discrimination under the law, including immigration law.
Not only is it important to keep the senate on a national level, but Elaine is a standard bearer for what a good Democratic candidate should stand for, and helping her do well will help progressive turnout across the state before this redistricting election.

As a gay man in North Carolina, we have to stop this time bomb the Republicans are setting up. They are trying to pass laws to make being gay that much harder, and then blocking measures that could prevent bullying and thus suicides. In my eyes, if they win, its only a matter of time before we see some poor kid from NC on the news. We can let this happen.
