I hate to say this but we can learn a few things from Republicans. Republicans stick together no matter what while Democrats tend to be scary and noncommittal. Republicans have mastered the art of party unity / loyalty while Democrats have mastered the art of complacency and running for the hills when things look bad.
There is absolutely no reason we should be biting our nails over the possibility of losing such Senators as Russ Feingold, Michael Bennett, Patty Murray, Harry Reid or even Barbara Boxer. Scott McAdams and Kendrick Meek should both win easily because the Republicans are splitting their votes. I blame myself just as much as I blame my party.
I have been been angry, frustrated and vocal about Kendrick Meek's refusal to drop out. But this situation has really bothered me, especially over the past weekend. The more I think about it, the more I feel that the lack of Democratic support for Kendrick Meek is really foul and I've been foul for going along with that logic. There are more than enough Democrats in Florida who could rally together and stand behind Meek if they really want to. Same thing in Alaska. They just don't want to, mostly because they are afraid to vote the wrong way.
I can't vote in Florida because I don't live there but I've been going to bat for Crist here at DKOS even though I KNOW Meek is a good and qualified candidate. I've only been doing that because I'm afraid of Marco Rubio. Period. I can't stand the thought of Crist occupying that seat but I am scared to death of Rubio having it. That fear alone has driven me to throw our guy under the bus faster than I can even say his name. That's just downright wrong.
Sticking together always seems to work for Republicans. They do it perfectly in the Senate and Congress ... vote no across the board and get their way even though they are in the minority. We always manage to have enough naysayers on our side who make it their personal business to run to the aid of the Republicans at break-neck speed.
Republicans stick together pretty well in the voting booths, too. Democrats have the voter registration edge across the country (excluding the South) but this is expected to be a tidal wave election for the Republicans. That's only possible because Democrats are siding with them or sitting this one out.
How did Joe Lieberman, after all his backstabbing, get reelected and keep his seat as a committee chair? How is Scott Brown sitting in the Senate today given that he comes from one of the bluest states? It's because WE allowed it! We stomp on ourselves faster and harder than any teabagger can.
No, I don't condone HOW the Republicans stick together. They are eager to do it even if it will hurt millions of people. I don't think we should EVER do that. But I do think that if the cause is right, if the candidate is right, if it's in the best interest of our country, then dammit, we need to stick together!
Whether we win or lose tomorrow is up to us. If we lose, we have no one to blame but ourselves. When it's all said and done, a loss means we CHOSE to vote against our candidates or not vote at all. We did that, not the Republicans, not the pundits, not the pollsters. That's on us.
