The following is a revised letter I have sent to the President and to the Majority Leader.
ht to VClib for helping me correct an unintentional but basic error in the earlier version of the letter.
=====================
4 November 2010
Dear Mr President,
Lots of folk have lots of advice for you and I doubt if mine will ever reach you, but I’d be a failed citizen if I did not try.
Stop. Stop with the bipartisan notion. Stop with any form or display of openness to the Republicans. They don’t want it.
What they want, and they’ve informed you directly, is to make you a one term President. They mean it.
So, the advice – if you haven’t already, call Senator Reid to the Whitehouse. Ask Senator Reid to either personally or through another Democratic Senator – Feingold would be a apropos choice – immediately upon resuming business to bring the Disclose Act to a vote. Remember your 21 August 2010 address to the Nation – that’s why I selected this piece of legislation to launch the Constitutional Option. Upon attempt to filibuster, Senator Reid or his surrogate calls a point of order (Constitutional Option). You know the drill at that point.
Upon having the way cleared for the vote on the Disclose Act, as you know, the precedent would now be set and Senator Reid can begin calling to vote the hundreds of pieces of legislation already passed by the House, as well as calling to vote the dozens of appointments requiring confirmation. Within the span of six weeks, you and Majority Reid can bring vast benefits to Americans and make it absolutely clear that it was purely Republican obstructionism, aided by an Unconstitutional procedure in the Senate that enabled that obstructionism.
The Senate Majority Leader of the 112th Congress can fire-wall any of the garbage legislation that the Republicans will undoubtedly shovel into the Senate.
By taking this bold action, now, even If you happen to be a one-term President, you likely will have passed more substantive and helpful legislation than any of your predecessors have in their first (or only) term.
However, I humbly predict that if you and Majority Leader Reid take this course of action you will win a landslide victory of proportions never seen before.
You see, Mr President, the only problem you have is that you do not realize the majority of Americans actually want you to succeed and you have a very clear mechanism for doing so.
You simply need to say NO to the Republicans, and you and the Majority Leader of the 112th Congress can say that to them, day after day, throughout the 112th Congress along with asking them one simple question – where are the jobs, Republicans, where are the jobs.
All the best
