Last night when all of the news was focusing on the tax deal something else was also reported but without much information. I seems that one of the new elected Tea Baggers, sorry I missed his name, is saying that the founding fathers wanted only people who owned property to have the vote and he wants that to be the standard again.
We have to really really watch this because he is most assuredly no the only one thinking like this and they are part of the party in power.
I can speak to this from personal experience. At a breakfast meeting several months ago well before the November election. A group of us were discussing the Tea Party and all of the protests against healthcare. One of the people in our group began to defend the Tea Party as a group of people wanting only to get back to the Constitution. As she defended them I thought, but did not say, what part of the Constitution. I could easily envision the return to no vote for women, no citizenship or voting rights for blacks, an a few other things that came with the changes following the Bill of Rights. And low and behold here we go. This guy is on tv suggesting that we, through their arcane interpretation of the Constitution eliminate a significant number of votersby going back to the requirement that all voters be property owners( leaving out the male and 21 years of age requirements). I guess it was too early to bring those up.
Frankly I am afraid that that is just the beginning. Back in power the repubs and the baggers,(really one in the same) are going to take us (or at least try to) down a path to repealing all of the amendments 11-27. Especially the ones that give them any and all advantages. Really folks we have to watch this crowd very carefully and pay close attention to any dealings that are not fully in the public eye.
I was always comforted by the one man one vote aspect of our system and believed that there were always more of us than of them but of late I don't know. These people are back and they are not going to let the opportunity pass for them to grab all of the power they can even if that means usurping it form everyone else and creating a virtual monopoly in our political system. We have already seen and felt the effects of the Supreme Court decision on money in the election process, now all they need to do is eliminate the opposition and save on the cost of elections too. A win win for them and a resounding defeat to democracy as we know it. WE CANNOT ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN.
