Does anyone have any idea what was going on today with the V-22 Osprey that was flying around today?
Here's a picture of the type of aircraft (obviously not the exact one I saw):
For those that aren't familiar with the aircraft, it's a sort of half plane, half helicopter platform that's used by the Marines and the Air Force. It can take off vertically like a helicopter and hover in the air, but then can also rotate it's rotors forward and fly like an airplane.
I first saw it while getting a few oysters on the half shell at Jesse's Fish Market at Maine Avenue. I heard a loud sound approaching that sounded like a helicopter (I was half right!) and then saw it as it flew over a few hundred feet above.
I saw it again while driving on 395 south.
But then the strangest part. Exiting 395 south and getting onto VA-110 next to the Pentagon, there's the Osprey again, but this time it's just hovering maybe 100 ft above the road!
Does anyone have any idea what was going on? Military exercise? Demonstration for generals or politicians?
All in all, it made my day much much more exciting and interesting.
