No one listened to me. I told them, elect John Kasich and the Republicans in Ohio and it will end very badly for you. It was just announced that Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, plans on introducing a bill that will end the ability of public workers to unionize. First they take away your union then you know what is next - your pay, because of course that is why state governments are near bankruptcy - public employees make too darn much.
Allowing state workers to unionize "hamstrings us in our ability to manage our costs," Jones said. Eliminating collective bargaining "means we can start having real discussions about merit. People should be paid and promoted based on merit."
Collective bargaining is target of next Ohio Senate
And this was by coincidence a day after a "business task force" created by the Ohio Chamber of Commerce - released "demands" that would make Ohio better for business.
To produce better state agency operations, the report said leaders need to give managers more power to handle employees and move to performance-based worker bonuses, instead of automatic pay raises for longevity.
"Ohio has multiple layers of protection, including unions, the courts and civil service, and the result is often gridlock," the report said.
The report also calls for public employees to pick up a greater portion of pension costs, moving to an even split instead of the current setup, where employers contribute 14 percent of a worker's pay, and employees pay 10 percent.
The report suggests creating specific agencies or departments that agree to accept less funding in exchange for more flexibility and freedom to manage. Those groups would be expected to produce savings, potentially $100 million in the first two years.
Report prescribes cures for state's budget crisis
With the GOP controlling both state houses and all the executive offices, public workers are in for a fight. I don't think it will end well.
