The latest entry into the "Sore Loser of the Year" category would, no doubt, be that friendly organization of loving individuals known as the Family Research Council whose members, unsurprisingly, are hopping mad at the heroic stand taken by our legislature and our president at repealing this misguided piece of legislation that's been hanging, albatross-like around America's neck for the last 17 years.
more below the fold if you care to know more:
I was scanning through the items on Towle Road and saw a video of FRC head Anthony Perkins whining about how the DADT repeal is nothing more than a way to appease a small block represented by those extreme radicals Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid:
I thought I'd do a little follow up on this to see what's what and found a little more interesting stuff surrounding FRC and the repeal that's mildly interesting but not at all surprising.
The first tidbit of information I found was that FRC intends to begin lawsuits to repeal the repeal as expressed by Paul McCluskey(sp), attorney for FRC:
Looking further, I found over at TPM a quote from FRC:
We'll be spending the next couple of weeks reassessing the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' debate. In fact, I've already been in conversations with Hill leaders about holding hearings in the New Year, as well as statutory and legislative oversight steps that can be taken to turn back aspects of the repeal and slow down--if not stop--the rest," the post reads.
"Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and others will be working with FRC to put a strict evaluation process in place," it goes on. "We want to ensure that the Pentagon is monitoring the effect of this radical change on the men and women in harm's way.
Surprise! Surprise!
Sources associated with Senator McCain's office are saying it's not true and that:
the law has been changed," and that's that.
Apparently, America's favorite hate group (designated by Southern Poverty Law Center, so don't come after me with any libel suits please!) will stop at nothing to see its agenda move forward-HEY! that's the same language FRC uses against gay rights groups, but i digress. What's abundantly clear here is that Family Research Council refuses to acknowledge that it's been beaten. The battle is won, the war is over (I truly believe) and the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell is now the law of the land and, according to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, this repeal is supported by 77% of Americans.
This is how I view the Family Research Council at this moment:
The Family Research Council is on the losing side of history here. They would do best to cut their losses and go home. Goodness knows, there's still marriage equality for them to ultimately lose. They need to go back to their lairs and come up with another laughable, losing strategy so we can waste our time an effort fighting for yet another cause that should be a no brainer.
But, then again, no one has ever accused the religious right of being reflective or thoughtful.
