Has anyone thought that Evan Bayh might take his $12M war chest, switch parties and run for President as a Republican? I mean the goopers have such a deep bench right now, right? And none of them polling more than 14%, Perot did better than that. Plus they've got the wingnuts stirred up and dragging them into extremist electoral oblivion, he'd be attractive as an antidote for those in the GOP who still had functioning minds, (I know, I know, quit snickering). Add to all that he has national name recognition, has opposed Obama on policy and doesn't have the baggage that any of the current hopefuls are saddled with.
Or might he run as an Independent? Yeah, the Tea Partiers wouldn't give him the time of day or any direct support, but they'd peel off a significant chunk of voters and take them into the weeds and out of the equation. And I bet that he'd catch a lot of Independents who used to be sane Republicans, they know the current GOP isn't functional, plus enough disaffected or conservative Democrats to make it a race.
If he did run as an Independent, I think it'd be another long step in the dissolution of the Republican party. They really would become irrelevant if they only managed a third party percentage in a presidential election, it would pretty much dis-band their wagon.
I still haven't heard whether he's term limited or if he could go back and run for Governor in Indiana again. I think the executive impulse is there, and he dragged his family up in front of the cameras to make his announcement. My impression is that he's either hiding something or up to something, I'm just not sure what.
