"Democrats take your money and give it to the poor. Republicans take your money and go to war. But make no mistake, they all take your money"
I remember my grandfather telling me this, while Grandmom shook her head in agreement, in the midst of the second Nixon Elections. Ya know Watergate and all that jazz,
Grandpop, was a dyed in the wool Democrat, was very proud of the fact that he and Grandmom had pensions AND social security.
After all Uncle Denny, Grandmom's Oldest Brother, lost his left arm in the Civil wars and was an organizer for unions in delaware Early 1900's that secured pensions. And Although a Doctor, my grandfather's father constantly reminded him of the Pinkerton and Pittsburgh. And how it was covered up by moving labor day to September instead of Maylike the rest of the world.
They were there, had lived through the Great War, The stock market crash, the ensuing depression, terrible flu epidemics, TB outbreaks, New Deals, WPA, the second world war and theboom economy that followed. Grandopop was born in 1901 and Grandmom in 1904. I thought them wise, and schooled in the ways of our country, and our political machines.
I used to love to sit and listen to my family argue Politics, talk about the days of Momma's house, the trails and tribulations they had risen above, and ponder on the future. They were all democrats, not a republican in the crowd, until my youngest Aunt married her husband. I remember hearing them talk about how they survived those dark times, and how foolish they thought so many in the family were for getting caught in the market in the 20's. How Mamma, my great grandmother, would feed the "hobos" out the back door every night with what ever was left over from her family of 13 children and her husband.
Victory Gardens still bloomed when I was a little girl, the blackout curtainsstill hung, and men went off after dinner to talk while the women cleaned up. Funny though, you could stay with either side and hear some very distinct opinions about the current state of affairs.
One of Grandmom's Brothers Leroy had been a local politician, when politics was a real full contact sport. Uncle Lee spent all of his time, trying to get more money to run again. How could he possibly worry abut the day to day tribulations of the people, when his real job was to raise money so he could stay in office. From a very early age I was taught that public service was a privileged, but that we should not expect our Politicians to really serve us. Why? Because it was incumbent upon the politician to keep his job. So that he could keep the pipeline open for Government money necessary to keep jobs coming to the state, municipality or ward. Uncle Lee's Talent was knowing how and where to get money. Either to be elected or to aid his Ward.
Uncle Lee had men who worked for him, they took care of the people in the ward, Listened to the widow, picked up the orphan, got the bread man money to expand, convinced the constituents what was and was not good for them.
I guess what I am trying to say is we should realize who we are electing, and what they really have to do to keep those jobs. Raise Money, Raise Money, Get money, Get money. It is the Chief of Staff, the Deputy Chief of Staff, and the Trusted advisers that make the politician. Dubba had Rove, for as evil as Rove could be, he was a great Chief of Staff. He made sure Dubba only had to do his job, Raise money.
It is time now to make this skill honest, please see this link, and sign up with us, it is not about Democrats or Republicans, it is about the honest and integrity of our political system
