Roxy & Me
Dear Pootie & Woozle Lovers,
I am a lover of life -- and that means animals, too. Running for Congress can be stressful, so when I want to relax or take a mental break on the campaign trail I visualize our family's wonderful rescue pets. I think of Roxy (black dog pictured above) who I walk every morning around Marina del Rey, Sparky, (Jack WaWa), the hyper-dog who back flips in our new campaign headquarters, as well as our cats, Sunnyman, Mr. Tuxedo, and Cayenne, the red Democrat. If only I could take these pets to Capitol Hill ... Ah well, at the very least I can advocate for them and their welfare.

Animal Welfare: Protect Pets & Wildlife
The way we treat animals reflects how we treat each other, locally, nationally and globally. All animals -- pets, farm animals, working animals such as search and rescue dogs, drug & bomb sniffing dogs, and service & therapy dogs, must be treated with kindness and care.
Humane treatment of animals precludes killing healthy animals.
The United States should become a leader in the field of humane animal care by following no-kill models of animal sheltering, such as those in communities like San Francisco, California and Tompkins County, New York.
I support legislation to increase humane and ethical treatment of all animals, including bills to:
* End puppy mills and other mass-breeding operations that are not humane.
* Require state and local agencies to include pets in their disaster plans
* Make animal-fighting activities a felony
* Prohibit the transport, possession, purchase, or sale of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption
* Restore the prohibition on the commercial sale and slaughter of wild free-roaming horses and burros
* Prohibit interstate and foreign commerce in primates for the pet trade
* Ban the slaughter of non-ambulatory farm animals and require humane euthanasia for downed animals
* Prohibit interstate transport of exotic animals for use in "canned" hunts

I will introduce legislation that requires children and teens who abuse animals to be provided, either by their families or by the community, proper psychological counseling to not only prevent further animal abuse but to prevent potential future violence and domestic abuse.
Studies show that animal abuse is often the first step on the path to domestic violence and anti-social, deviant violent behavior.
Early intervention, as well as the teaching of empathy, can help children and teens change their behavior and refocus their lives.
Here I am with with Lily, my good friend Jackie's therapy dog.
Thank you for your love for pooties, woozles, furbutts, etc., and thanks for your support,

I'm Marcy Winograd and I'm challenging Blue Dog corporate Democrat Jane Harman in the June 8, 2010 Democratic Party primary. In 2006, when I jumped into the race just three months before the primary, I mobilized almost 38% of the vote.
