Oh yes he did.
I just named a thing after myself. How about that? I don't even diary very often. But, here's how it works:
The conservatives out there have a hands-off approach to... well... everything. They don't want to dirty their hands on things like gays, or women, or uteruses, or the poor, or the infirm, or foreigners. Adam Smith has informed them that if they leave their hands on themselves (stop thinking that, you're dirty) then an invisible hand will take care of all those other nasty little things for them.
"Why should I pay for blah-blah-blah?"
Well, here's the deal, Inarticulate Republican Guy- you will be paying for it. It's just a matter of when.
By way of a fr'instance, let's take a crazy girl. We'll call her Katie, because I used to date a Katie.
Katie is schizophrenic. Katie is totally totally crazy. (I'll stop now)
Anyway, we have two options: we can insure Katie with government insurance. They will treat her, keep her institutionalized if need be. They'll balance psychiatric care with new combinations of drugs. Over the years, headway will be made, so that ultimately, she is a contributing member of society. As she gets older, she'll never experience a gap in coverage that will make her skimp on meds and maybe slip up.
Or, we can do it the Repubs way: we can tell her parents to use "the best health care system in the world," which has limits on how much treatment Katie can receive, how often she can be hospitalized, which treatments are covered and which aren't.
But the government, and the taxpayers will end up paying for Katie anyway. Because she'll never find her equilibrium, she'll become homeless, and eventually, she or someone else will get hurt.
And we can pay for her to be committed, or imprisoned.
So ultimately, we end up paying for Katie either way. The only difference is Katie. In one scenario, we pay for her early, and she pays us back. With commerce, and work, and taxes, and all the good that comes from having a happy, healthy part of our country.
Or we can have her as a drain.
So that's the difference: with progressive, socialized causes, we pay for these things early, cheaply, before they become a problem, and our investment pays off. Or, we can pay for them later, to sweep up broken shells of human beings who can't do anything anymore.
