For all intentional purposes lets say Kerry Wins the Presidency and we get a net pick up of 2 in the senate. This puts us at 50-49-1. Kerry resigns his Senate post to become President. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romey appoints a Republican. Its now 49-50-1. If Jeffords becomes a Democrat or votes for Dashle- its deadlock. The Vice President then breaks the tie. Kerry's running mate then gives the senate to the Dems. We can appearently win with 49 so long as Jeffords coorporates. He has in the past the real question is must he be a Democrat for the Senate to change hands or can he be still and indie and cast his vote for Dashle giving the Dems back the Senate?
