Former Wisconsin governor Tommy Thompson announced today that he will not be running against incumbent senator Russ Feingold. Thompson's announcement appears to put Feingold's seat in "safe-for-the-Democrats territory.
Thompson made the announcement today to reporters for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel just before giving a speech at a tea-bag rally on the steps of the state capitol in Madison.
Feingold faces two other Republican candidates, but is far ahead of both of them in the polls. Feingold had been slightly behind Thompson in theoretical matchups.
Thompson said that he decided not to run because his family was against it.
