KFC recently announced a new promotion partnership with the Susan G Komen Foundation called Buckets for the Cure. The idea is that participating restaurants will sell chicken in special pink buckets and will donate 50 cents of the proceeds to the Foundation. KFC pledges to donate between $1 million to $8 million with 25% pledged to Komen's 120 local affiliates for breast cancer programs in local communities. Don't get me wrong, I love the Susan G Komen Foundation and applaud its efforts to fight breast cancer. The Race for the Cure is one of the best fundraising concepts in non-profit fundraising and a great day out. Nothing makes an impression like a sea of pink.
The question about this program is whether or not it is a good idea. Yes, raising funds for breast cancer research is a worthy goal. Yes, it nice of KFC to take part in that effort. Yes, anything that raises awareness of breast cancer and its effects on the families of those diagnosed is laudable.
As Marion Nestle said on her blog Food Politics
OK, scientists are still arguing about the dietary determinants of breast cancer and aren’t too worried about fat, but they do worry about body weight. Maintaining a healthy body weight is still the first recommendation of the American Cancer Society, for example. Isn’t this campaign an incentive to buy as many buckets of KFC as you can?
So this is another of my short diaries. I am still finding my voice and developing a writing style. Currently I am using my diaries to draw attention to items that I come across in other places. It is my hope that I am spreading the word to at least a few people here. I am still learning more than I am contributing but it has been a wonderful experience and I hope to remain a part of this community for a long time.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and, as always, have a great day Kossacks.
