SeaScum: like pondscum, but bigger! As big as the entire state of Alaska!
Congratulations, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Baked Alaska)! While this honor has been bestowed in the past on dumb statements, today's award goes to positions taken out of sheer greed. And she's not just saying dumb things. She's preparing a vote, as early as next week, on a resolution disapproving of the EPA's decision to regulate carbon.
Snark if you will, rage at the puppeteers pulling her strings, but take action -- call your Senators and ask them to vote no on her disapproval resolution.
Murky on Tuesday at a Senate hearing, scolding her friends like Big Sister would tell the little kids to clean up before Dad gets home:
"I would suggest to all three of you that we are in this together, because this incident is affecting, will have impact on the development of our energy policy for this country."
Dear Senator: what is this we of whom you speak? You may be in bed with BP, Halliburton, and TransOcean, but the rest of us have better taste.
Murkier on Thursday, scuttling an immediate increase in the cap on strict liability damages from $75 million to $10 billion. The increase
would have the unintended effect of allowing only the biggest oil companies to develop offshore, because smaller and independent companies could not afford the bonding and insurance needed with a cap that high.
Poor, poor Mom & Pop oil companies! Murkowski was derided throughout the blogosphere. However, The Empire of Murk Strikes Back.
Remember last January when Murkowski introduced a resolution to disapprove the Environmental Protection Agency's regulation of greenhouse gases from stationary sources? Remember her agreeing to put her disapproval resolution on hold? That was so March! Yesterday, the EPA formally announced its regulation of greenhouse gases. Murkowski helpfully reminded people that she has until June 7 to bring the disapproval resolution to the floor. Rumor has it being introduced as early as next Thursday, May 20.
Call your Senators and ask them to vote NO on Murkowski's disapproval resolution. Many progressives hope that the EPA will do what the Kerry-YourNameHere-Lieberman climate bill won't. Murkowski only needs 51 votes to block the EPA from taking any action at all.
For blocking action to make BP pay for the damage it's caused and for trying to block the EPA from action, Murkowski wins the SeaScum of the Week Award. Congratulations.
