Live Video Feed of Oil Spill Crashes Under Pressure
Well, not really. Huffingtonpost's headline doesn't quite deliver when you find:
UPDATE: The live feed of the Gulf oil spill has been intermittent due to immense traffic. We'll be checking constantly for the best working feed and will update on this page with the latest.
This isn't the first time I've been suckered by a Huffingtonpost headline. How's this:
NTSB Board: Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger Still A Hero But Could Have Landed At Airport Instead Of Hudson River
Another provocative headline, then WAY down in the text you find:
Sullenberger's decision to ditch into the river "provided the highest probability that the accident would be survivable," the board said.
Documents released by the board indicate the plane could have made it back to LaGuardia – barely. However, a successful return would have required Sullenberger to make an immediate decision with little or no time to assess the situation. He also would have had no way of knowing that he would be successful.
Now maybe Huffingtonpost, unlike other news outlets, really thought that was the most important finding in the report. Or maybe it was a good way to tease me off the front page. But it feels manipulative. Call me naive but I'd really like my go-to news consolidator to be a bit more, say, straightforward.
