Hartford Courant:
"At times when I have sought to honor veterans, I have not been as clear or precise as I should have been about my service in the Marine Corps Reserves," Blumenthal said in a statement emailed to the Courant late Sunday by his spokeswoman, Maura Downes. "I have firmly and clearly expressed regret and taken responsibility for my words.
"I have made mistakes and I am sorry. I truly regret offending anyone,'' Blumenthal said. "I will always champion the cause of Connecticut's and our nation's veterans."
GQR :
A recent survey of Connecticut voters conducted May 19 - 20 shows that despite the efforts of Linda McMahon’s campaign, Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has withstood the attacks of the past week very well. Blumenthal maintains strong standing and holds a wide margin [55-40, MoE +/- 4] over McMahon....
So now we have two polls (Rasmussen by 3 and GQR by 15) showing a lead for Blumenthal over McMahon post-Vietnam flap. The partisan memo states he has an 11 point lead with unaffiliated voters, which is CT's largest group (followed by Dems and then Rs.)
I think Greg Sargent got it right last week:
Botttom line: It seems clear he'll survive. But man, what a colossal train wreck. Don't do it again, Dick.
That's especially true if he runs against McMahon, who won the non-binding nod at the party convention but still faces an Aug 10 primary against Rob Simmons, who as a Vietnam combat vet is better positioned to take advantage. But Ras had Blumenthal over Simmons by 11, and he seems to be trailing in all the polls to date agaisnt McMahon, despite carring a used teabag in his pocket.
