You are in the current BP disaster ROV, number 101. Number 100 is here.
Little did I know when I typed this:
I'm volunteering to help with the (4+ / 0-)
mothership idea Garrett posted above. I'm not sure of the logistics, but my PM is in my profile, and I'll do whatever's needed to help make this more accessible for people - the thread's getting long now and harder to get through, especially for people on dialup or wanting to keep up on mobile browsers.

That I'd be doing the hundred-and-first as well. This has been one crazy ride, and I've really enjoyed "meeting" you all. Thanks to all the ROV pilots, the Mothership tenders, the commentators, and the just-cruising-by-ers. You're a great community, and you've been invaluable to this coast girl whose heart breaks a little more every day this thing goes on.
Please DO NOT Rec this diary, rather REC THE MOTHERSHIP instead. She needs your love to stay afloat.
Please be kind to kossacks with bandwidth issues. Please do not post images or videos. Again, many thanks for this.
PLEASE visit Crashing Vor and Pam LaPier's diaries to find out how you can help the Gulf now and in the future. We don't have to be idle! And thanks to Crashing Vor and Pam LaPier for working on this!
For a description of the mothership/ROV liveblogging process, check out this thread.
Please DO NOT Rec this diary, Rec the Mothership here.
BP put up a video explaining the LMRP procedure and the future plans.
Go to the Deepwater Horizon Data Summary for a wealth of actual data from the Department of Energy.
The BOP and pressure drawings are viewable here. The CAD drawings come highly recommended by the techies among us. h/t Claudius Bombarnac.

H/t to Pluto for finding this:
Here is an excellent image of what is supposed to exist under the wellhead. Take the comments from Halliburton with a grain of salt since this is part of their "blame those two" PR campaign.

Since we have so many talented writers and poets (you know I'm looking at you, Arthur Poet) I thought you might like to be involved in this project.
Poets for Living Waters
Poets for Living Waters is a poetry action in response to the BP oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico begun on April 20, 2010, one of the most profound human-made ecological catastrophes in history.
The first law of ecology states that everything is connected to everything else. An appreciation of this systemic connectivity suggests a wide range of poetry will offer a meaningful response to the current crisis, including work that harkens back to Hurricane Katrina and the ongoing regional effects.
Please submit 1-3 poems, a short bio, and credits for any previously published submissions to: poetsforlivingwaters@yahoo.com

I was home for a short time this weekend - too short, really. I felt like I needed to be there for the funeral of my Dad's last uncle, in spite of the 14 hours on the road, the gas used, all the rest of my usual concerns about travelling home. But in a way, being home this weekend was a good thing as well. While I wouldn't get in the Sound right now if Halfwit Haley wrote me a personal check, I didn't mind walking along on damp sand, ruining the BP-green with black tips pedicure that so distressed my Momma.
As mentioned last night in an ROV, I spent a couple of hours plundering through one of my Dad's bookshelves. Nestled in with his dog-eared copies of the Hanon and Czerny Scales and Etudes, stacks of Chopin and Brahms and Beethoven, there were at least two boxes of random stuff that only I could've found interesting - really - I'm the crazy left-wing tree-hugger in my family. There were articles by Robert Saplovsky, the aforementioned copy of "Cold Turkey" by Vonnegut, and a handful of mostly unintelligible charcoals of animals?, clouds?, or waves, maybe, sketched while sprawled in the sun on Horn. Nestled in with those random smudges of black were a couple of photographs. One in particular, I was ecstatic to find.
This must've been my first trip on the Swetman. I was ... fourteen, I think. I'd been on boats before, but they were smallish jobs, only once or twice on saltwater, and never with a bunch of other people's children who were my responsibility. I was beyond terrified, not of the water or of the sails, but of having the kids on the water.
But - in my memory, at least, that day was perfect. Hot as Hades, but those things didn't bother me then as they do now. I wish I could have had a few of those hours back when I was home this past weekend: air clean and salty-humid, the spotted glasses and sticky, salty, sweaty, sunscreen-y patina of the ocean, an afternoon spent walking Front and East beaches in Ocean Springs and cleaning up the beaches there. I'm nostalgic for those childhood memories, yes - but I'm more heartsick that as it looks now, I won't even be able to approximate them.
...
This is where you want to be for discussion, worrying, tearing up, and caring for each other. It's also where you're welcome to be angry and scream and curse and cry and rant at the criminal negligence and greed that have brought us all together. Most importantly, though, it's where we can learn from those kossaks among us (I'll not name names for abject fear of leaving one of you out, but you know who you are.) who bring the light of knowledge - sometimes with heat, sometimes without it - and teach us about what's happening beneath our Gulf of Mexico.
