This diary is an occasional posting of a book that i am working on. I am a high school science teacher and I am going to be presenting something I have worked on for the past three years at the NSTA Annual Conference in San Francisco next year. The work is known as "101 Ways to Impress Your Friends and Family...with Your Science Knowledge." The strand I am aiming this towards at the NSTA Conference is on Building Scientific Minds: Inspiring Teaching and Effective Learning.
In both my chemistry and physics classes, as I am teaching, I will stop and tell the kids to impress their friends and family with what we just learned.
I have found that this is actually the best way for my students to talk to their parents about science and what they are learning in school. And i have had quite a few parents tell me that they have had their children talk to them about science/school for the first time in a long time. (And i have had a few students tell me that their parents think they are nerds for trying to impress them.)
The format for the entries is pretty straight forward:
Idea presented in class:
Concept:
Explanation:
And it will cover 50 +/- ideas for chemistry/physics, one page per concept - so a nice short book of 50 or so pages.
I decided to post here so i can get feedback on entries before i present in SF next year.
