Many details of the oil spill have been slow to emerge. For a long time, BP restricted access to underwater camera feeds. Regulatory agencies failed to properly oversee the oil industry. The public need a means to permanently oversee BP's operations.
Cameras showing the spill are a first step. This should be a permanent arrangement mandated by law. A new law should be passed to make public oil industry internal documents(like FOIA), and videos. Furthermore, all oil platforms should be required to permanently install camera, that stream live over the internet allowing to ensure safe practices are being undertaken.
The oil industry has been allowed to operate with too much secrecy. If their operations are more publicly watched, they will be more likely to undertake proper precautions, and behave in a safe manner. The public has a right to know what is being done, when it can potentially have a very serious impact
