Last completed signature quilt, "All My Relations"
My sister and I are very grateful that the Community Quilt Project has been so warmly embraced here at Daily Kos. We’ve met some wonderful people on line and have produced thirty-two quilts so far (with more on the way). The project has made our hearts sing – and so many of you have written to us to say it has touched you deeply, as well. We look forward to meeting many of you in person in Las Vegas! We will have a table in the exhibit hall, close to the book store, where you will be able to sign a signature quilt to benefit Feeding America and view the signature quilts from past conferences.
We’ll be so glad to see you there – and if you have suggestions for the Community Quilt project or other community projects, please stop by and chat.
Detail of star quilt
The project has sustained my sister and me through a hard economy, through your generosity. But we have some needs toward the end of the year – and we want to be able to pay a full fee for a table at Netroots Nation. We also want to give a little something to you, too. So, for this fundraiser, we have made a numbered, limited edition of 400 coffee cozies – little quilts to use with take out coffee cups (or soda cups – or those clever, ceramic mugs that look like take out coffee cups). They are intended to replace the paper sleeve you get with your coffee, thus saving a bit of burden on the landfills. We used the trimmings of Green Dream batting from the Love Catcher quilts to make these, a batting that is made from recycled soda bottles. Each bears a stamp on the inside reading:
Community Quilt Project celebrates Netroots Nation 2010 _ of 400 (limited edition)
They’ll be available at our Netroots Nation table – but we want them to be available to those who won’t be attending, as well.
Heat setting the stamp on the cozies’ linings
For every online donation of $12 or more, we’ll send a cozy to you (if you want one) as our gift. Please use this PayPal link – and let me know if there is a particular fabric you prefer. There are only two of most of these cozies – so please speak up for your favorite! See pictures below! Or let us choose for you...they are all very nice, I promise!
Sewing the cozies
We realize that not everyone can donate – and we truly value everyone who participates in the Community Quilt project – with messages and with kind wishes for the quilt recipients. So we want to do an additional drawing for a gift of one of our tied, charm lap throws (130 different fabrics!). Everyone donating and receiving a coffee cozy will be included, one entry per cozy – but you can also be included by writing a short essay (50 words or less) on "What the Community Quilt Project Means to Me" – if we find your essay is on topic, we’ll include you in the drawing! Send the essay by email on or before August 1, 2010, to communityquilts (at) yahoo (dot) com – and put "Community Quilt Project" in the subject line. Be sure to tell us your online screen name. If we get some interesting essays, I will share them in a diary on August 15, the day we will do the drawing. There is a limit of one essay per person.
Without more ado, here are some of the fabrics in the coffee cozies, shown before shaping so you can see the patterns a little better. I’ve arranged these in rough categories, with descriptions (from top to bottom).
