The ruling in Massachusetts yesterday was a huge win for those of us committed to overturning DOMA and ensuring universal marriage equality.
As a US Senator I will always stand up for DOMA’s repeal. I will fight tirelessly for universal marriage equality because I believe it is a simple matter of fulfilling the promise this country was founded on – the promise of equal rights and equal opportunities for every citizen.
In New Hampshire we say ‘live free or die.’ We value individual freedom above all else and understand that the government has no business intruding in the private lives of its citizens.
But the Republicans I’m up against aren’t listening to New Hampshire. They’ve staked positions squarely against equality. Kelly Ayotte called the Granite State’s marriage equality law "disappointing." She vowed to do all she could to protect DOMA in the US Senate.
This country and this state need representatives who aren’t afraid to stand up for what’s right and who will fight to move this country forward. Narrow-minded federal policies like DOMA and the politicians like Kelly Ayotte who defend them will do nothing except move us backwards.
