I am watching the end of Countdown and the segment on Laura Schlessinger. I won't even touch her comments with a ten foot pole. They were wrong. But in watching the clips of both her radio show and her appearance on Larry King a pet peeve of mine comes up.
Do Americans, or at least politicians and media folks, not get how to say they are sorry?
I've taken actions in my life that I am not proud of. Said many more things that fall into that category. I am nowhere close to perfect. I make mistakes. Run off my mouth. But when I realize that has happened, often as the words are coming out of my mouth, I apologize.
I don't use my most hated phrase when I apologize that is so often used, "if I offended somebody I am sorry." Well of course you offended somebody otherwise you wouldn't be saying you are sorry.
As a very smart boss of mine once told me:
Tommy be careful. If you say I "think" somebody can argue with that. If you say I "feel," well only you know how you feel.
Can anybody here recall the last time a public figure or politician said they were sorry in a manner that was heartfelt? I can't. It does matter. It should be talked about.
My former boss used to say to me that I said I was sorry too often. He went on to say it made me look weak. I ran to find another job. How you say are sorry matters. Seems to be a lost art in our nation.
