Before you rule out our chance of beating John McCain in Arizona this year, take a few minutes to watch the following video of Democratic Senate candidate Rodney Glassman talking to the Maddow blog.
The first thing you notice: he can talk. He talks a mile a minute and he knows his stuff. He knows Arizona issues -- whether it's immigration, solar power, water, rail, whatever -- and he speaks optimistically about a better future that's within reach.
Rodney just won the Democratic primary last week, and he looks like someone who's on his game.
In fact, Rodney Glassman is so on his game right now that -- and here is where I found myself really impressed with this guy -- at one particular moment on the tape when the interviewer is interrupted by a loud noise and says, "Is that a train?", Rodney, without skipping a beat or taking a breath, rattles off this:
That right there is called a grade separated interchange, which means the cars can go underneath and the train can go on top. In the city of Maricopa there's an elementary school and the Union Pacific rail line has a train that goes by every 20 minutes -- right next to an elementary school.
Every 20 minutes that wall goes down, the buzzers go off, the kids stop learning.
The city council from the city of Maricopa went back to meet with John McCain to talk about a grade separated interchange next to an elementary school yard, and John McCain says he wouldn't support it because he considers that pork.
John McCain has really just built a career giving speeches in other states about what he doesn't do for us.
A good formula, well executued:
- Quiz question answered
- Detailed local knowledge demonstrated with allusion to the possiblity of a better future
- Answer slams John McCain
This dude is ready to hammer John McCain on any issue, at any time of the day, six ways to Sunday, right up to November 2. This could get interesting.
