I didn't believe it when I read it. Then I watched the footage of it.
No wonder John McCain thinks Americans won't pick cabbage for $50 an hour. No wonder David Vitter thinks everybody's rich. No wonder seemingly every Republican running for office is excited about dismantling Social Security, unemployment benefits, and other safety nets for the 97% of Americans who really need it.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel thinks that ...
no one is suffering more than people making more than $250,000 a year
He doesn't just think it, he said words to that effect on the floor of the Senate ... with a straight face.
McConnell explaining why he doesn't want to tax millionaires and billionaires making MORE THAN $250,000 A YEAR (which happens to be more than the salary of the President of the United States):
We can’t let the people who’ve been hit hardest by this recession and who we need to create the jobs that will get us out of it foot the bill for the Democrats’ two-year adventure in expanded government."
97% of Americans don't make $250,000 or more, and I'd venture to say that most of those 97% Americans would argue that they've been hit a lot harder by the recession than the super wealthy. Big business is actually doing pretty well right now. It's those making much, much, much less that had their families turned upside down by the Wall Street meltdown.
Ninety-seven percent. That's a big pool of voters.
