I want to congratulate Elizabeth Warren on her appointment to help build the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
This was a really important step in making sure there's someone speaking for the rest of us, not just Wall Street megabanks, in the halls of Washington's regulatory system. The news that Warren will report directly to the President is especially encouraging.
Achievements like this don't happen in a vacuum, and every blogger who wrote about this issue, every citizen who signed a petition, and everyone who calls a member of Congress can take their own little slice of the credit. For my part, our campaign was one of the first to publicly support Warren's appointment, and I believe she will be a strong advocate for consumer protections that people in Kentucky and across America so desperately need.
My opponent, Rand Paul, has said that non-violent crime -- like Wall Street crimes -- shouldn't even be against the law. Maybe that's why Sarah Palin came to Louisville yesterday to fundraise for Rand Paul.
You probably know that the right-wingers love Sarah Palin, so if you could contribute $5 or more to help me fight back, it would be a big help.
Consumer protection has been one of my top priorities as Attorney General of Kentucky. We took on big oil companies for price gouging and drug companies for Medicaid fraud, and fought to hold down utility rates, in total saving Kentucky families over $200 million.
Rand Paul sides with corporations over consumers. He opposes creating the financial regulatory agency; dismisses the need for Wall Street reform; and stands with big corporations rather than working families. He would love to let Wall Street continue its risky gambles with our pensions and savings, gambles that have already plunged our country into a recession and jeopardized our future economic security.
We need more leaders like Elizabeth Warren to stop people like Rand Paul from gambling away our economic future, and fortunately, now it looks like we'll have one.
