who is in the process of joining the Army as his only hope of security.
He and his girlfriend were living in Portland OR, doing OK until they became unemployed. I don't understand it all, but for him he was hired into a job way over his head, and couldn't keep it. That makes him ineligible for unemployment.
But joining the Army (his choice, not mine) is a LONG process, and while he is waiting for MEPS and then boot camp, 3 months minimum, he is living in his car, in Junction City, KS.
This is not a political diary, but a request for ideas / assistance.
I am not sure how to help.
We have sent him money several times in the past few weeks, because even sleeping in a Walmart parking lot, you need gas to go anywhere and food to eat. He is applying for work in between appointments with his recruiter, but so far no luck, and he says he is starting to smell like he's homeless. Walmart wants him to come inside less often. We can't keep supporting him from afar.
He is in Kansas to be close to his long time girlfriend. She also lost her Portland (mall kiosk) job, and is now living with her sister in Kansas, who won't take him in or help out; she stopped sleeping in the car with him, since she had an option.
I just talked to him; he hasn't any idea what to do next. And neither do I.
