Welcome to Press the Face, a Sunday-morning talk show liveblog where you can respond to the Sunday talks with your opinions, support, refutations, or ravings. The larger goal is to provide meaningful accounts of the the shows for those who are unable to watch them, but it's also an opportunity to share our thoughts in real time as armchair spectators of the sport of political discussion.
UPDATE: Press the Face will go on hiatus Sunday, February 13 to clear the way for the DK4 transition. We will gather again on DK4 on Sunday, February 20 (same bat time, different bat channel!).
Sarah Palin, in her own words (because we can't make this stuff up):
That was another one of those WTF moments that when he has so often repeated the Sputnik moment that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space. Yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time, that it resulted in the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union, so I listen to that Sputnik talk over and over again, and I think we don’t need one of those.
Sigh. What's a teacher to do? English teachers can start with her use of the intransitive verb "aspire" as an intransitive. History teachers might want to redirect her concept of the space race as having been victorious for, ahem, the Americans. Econ teachers could partner with poli sci teachers to point out the basic facts of the Soviet economy as a function of its political history. And science teachers may want to bring little Sarah on a field trip to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum to see why no one is talking about putting another version of Sputnik into the sky.
And now a little advice to you, Sarah, dear, from a speech teacher: When you don't know WTF you're talking about, try keeping your mouth shut. Better to remain quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Oh, wait. . .too late. . .
