Instead of reinventing the wheel over and over, let's see what religious liberal organizations are already doing things. This is a partial list.
General
Faith Voices for the Common Good
Faith Voices educates the wider public about the shared values, issues, and ethical concerns of religious people and their organizations and contributes to the renewal of American democratic life through inter-religious education and knowledge.
We coordinate and enhance collaborative work among our diverse networks with a focus on major social issues, such as ecumenical and interfaith understanding, economic justice, and nonviolence. We make use of various internet technologies and face-to-face events to encourage dialogue, to deepen understanding, and to generate ideas and strategies.
The Network of Spiritual Progressives
We are led by three of the most provocative public intellectuals active in the area of religion and American culture.
Rabbi Michael Lerner is the editor of TIKKUN magazine, rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue in Berkeley and San Francisco, CA, and the author of eleven books, including most recently The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right.
Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine nun and longtime social justice advocate, is the author of more than thirty books, including Called to Question: A Spiritual Memoir. In addition to cochairing the Network of Spiritual Progressives, she is the executive director of BenetVision, a research center and clearinghouse for spiritual resources.
Cornel West is currently a professor of religion at Princeton University. Among his several books are Jews and Blacks: A Dialogue on Race, Religion, and Culture in America (with Rabbi Michael Lerner) and Democracy Matters: Winning the Fight Against Imperialism.
The Interfaith Alliance
The Interfaith Alliance is equally committed to protecting the integrity of both religion and democracy in America. We champion religious freedom by respecting individual rights, promoting policies that protect both religion and democracy and uniting diverse voices to challenge extremism and build common ground.
Issue Advocacy
National Religious Campaign Against Torture
NRCAT's goals are:
1. Bring about changes in U.S. policy to prohibit -- without exception -- all U.S.-sponsored or U.S.-enabled torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
2. Expand the moral consensus among the American people that torture is never acceptable.
3. Encourage and enable national denominations, faith groups, national and regional religious organizations, congregations, and individual people of faith to engage actively in efforts to end torture including educating the public about torture and detainee treatment and urging the public to end torture.
Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice
The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice brings the moral power of religious communities to ensure reproductive choice through education and advocacy. The Coalition seeks to give clear voice to the reproductive issues of people of color, those living in poverty, and other underserved populations.
Catholics for Choice
Catholics for Choice seeks to shape and advance sexual and reproductive ethics that are based on justice, reflect a commitment to women's well-being and respect and affirm the capacity of women and men to make moral decisions about their lives. CFC works in the United States and internationally to ensure that all people have access to safe and affordable reproductive healthcare services and to infuse our core values into public policy, community life and Catholic social thinking and teaching.
Soulforce
Soulforce, guided by the spirit of truth and empowered by the principles of relentless nonviolent resistance, works to end the religious and political oppression of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning people.
Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America
Responding to the call of Latin America’s poor majorities, CRLN is an interfaith education, action, and advocacy network. CRLN equips and mobilizes religious leaders and congregations to advance peace, justice and human rights in our hemisphere. Through speakers, workshops, monthly membership updates, advocacy action initiatives, delegations to Latin America, and meetings with U.S. policy-makers, CRLN engages religious communities and leaders to speak out for just U.S. policies.
