Yes, I love DailyKos. The interaction here is better than at any other web site and I like the ambiance of the site. And yet as the Temptations put it in the song my love is
Why? I am not certain. My first thought are the bugs. Why so many I wonder? When DailyKos changed, the site felt like an alpha release. The site still feels like a Beta release. I have been programming since 1965. I know that at one time the site was based on Scoop with some good changes. Scoop was (I do not know it it still is) written in Perl which is ideal for manipulating text.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Perl, Perl is a great high level language that is frequently used to build web interfaces. Web experts should know Perl inside out. I have written many programs and used Perl in web site construction and to interface websites to databases. After I test the code before releasing, I rarely find bugs. Okay Scoop is large and DailyKos now contains many more features than scoop did when I used Scoop, but that is no excuse.
Second thought that comes to mind is "unlimited Diaries" and "unlimited Groups." Some of my favorite authors post multiple diaries now. For some, but not all, the writing is not nearly as good as the writing used to be. I find myself wishing to go back to fewer diaries, perhaps one every other day and encouraging that the authors put more thought into their work. As to groups, yeah there are just too damn many groups. Groups are supposed to be good for forming communities. Yes, I love "Cranky Users." Yes I love "Protest Music." Yes I like and have joined other groups. Yet for the vast majority of groups there just is no sense of community.
Next is the email service. I have used email since it was first created over forty years ago. It took a long time to learn how to find new messages. Most systems since the early days have made new messages trivial to find. Why do I have to go looking all over to find a new message? This is annoying to me.
So I am still cranky and cranky lovers have their love fade away.
