I seem like a bastard. I may be a bastard. Fair enough, YMMV. But, this is what I think of Libya.
Libya. Why the Hell are we there? Does it (1) help secure U.S. safety, (2) and that's it. No other reason is worth it.
I have a simple equation to foreign wars: do they make the average U.S citizen safer? If not, we should get out (or never get in).
Does this mean I will let rebels and innocents be gunned down? Sadly, yes. I wish it was different but it is not my country. And every day many die in the U.S. because we spend our money on wars rather than food, healthcare, and shelter. I'd rather save my countrymen.
Does this mean I don't think we need to keep Libya from chaos? Again, yes. It's not our country (a mantra all American leaders need to memorize). Let them revolt. If it works, great. If it does not, there will be another occasion in the future as the trend is to freedom.
Does this mean I don't have some concept of "protecting the U.S's interests in the Middle East"? Once again, yes. "Protecting our interests" has lead to countless U.S. deaths. I don't care if our oil goes to $10 a gallon. We do not belong there and we should not be there.
We are already fighting two rather pointless wars. Getting rid of the Taliban; fine. Sticking around for a decade; not fine - let Afghanistan figure itself out. Even if Taliban takes over again - so be it. If they attack us again, let's crush them again. Then leave.
So, I do not mean to be a bastard, but I would save U.S. lives over all else. Libya has not (recently) taken U.S. lives. So, let them revolt and let them put it down and let them, and just them, figure out where their country is going.
We do not belong there, and we should never have gotten in.
