Americans are starting to see what it means being governed by Republicans and they don't like it one bit. The new gallup poll that came out this morning shows that Americans support the unions' position over the Repulican governors' position when it comes to state budget fights.
With political battles over state budgets and collective bargaining still playing out to varying degrees in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana, Maine, and several other states, 48% of Americans say they agree more with the unions in these disputes, while 39% agree more with the governors. Thirteen percent favor neither side or have no opinion.
Democrats overwhelming support unions (70%) while Republicans support GOP governors' position (65%). Independents also support unions' position by 45% to 40%. What is interesting is and may affect the future is that young people support unions significantly by 61%.
Although unions have lost the battle of collective bargaining in various states (Wisconsin, Ohio, etc), they have a great chance to win the war. This collective bargaining battle has energized Democrats, the young, the mid-west, blue-collar workers, "Reagan Democrats", etc. It has even turned off the reliable GOP base of cops and firefighters http://www.politico.com/....
Republicans think that this fight is going to go away but it has just started. Wisconsin is heating up with its recall ballots and its judgeship race. Ohio most likely will have this as a ballot issue in the Fall of 2011 which means it will be the MAIN EVENT in the heat of the presidential campaign and the Republican primary race.
It has helped Obama's numbers in the Mid-West and may hurt Republicans in Ohio and Wisconsin in 2012.
Things are just starting...
