My goodness.
You knew the Freeperati were prepared to pooh-pooh any criticism of their beloved Ayn Rand's magnum opus, but in the end, the pooh-poohing was a bit muted.
Ok - actually they kinda agreed with Ebert.

Roger Ebert gives 1 star to Atlas Shrugged: Part I

I feel like my arm is all warmed up and I don’t have a game to pitch. I was primed to review "Atlas Shrugged." I figured it might provide a parable of Ayn Rand’s philosophy that I could discuss. For me, that philosophy reduces itself to: "I’m on board; pull up the lifeline." There are however people who take Ayn Rand even more seriously than comic-book fans take "Watchmen." I expect to receive learned and sarcastic lectures on the pathetic failings of my review.
How dare he!

It's getting a 0% fresh rating right now over at RottenTomatoes.com But then it just started getting reviews. So far, they all hate it. Consensus seems to say it is very “low-budget” and poorly made and written with wooden acting and dialogue. It doesn't do Ayn Rand justice.
BTW, in all my years of monitoring movie reviews at RT I've never before seen a 0% rating for any movie.

Obviously a bunch of commies.

RT is a decent site for movie livers.
0% means it sucks.
Really, really sucks.

I believe the budget was less than $15M, which is a pittance today. The trailer looks like a who's who of television character actors, not even leads. The man who penned the adopted screenplay hasn't one other writing credit, or any credit to his name. And, it's directed by a first time director who has actually made his living being one of those character actors - not a recipe for success when trying to adopt for the screen such complicated source material.
I wasn't hopeful going into it. It's like Anna Karenina being made as a Lifetime movie of the week. No way does that end up doing justice to Tolstoy.

Come on, you guys! Surely that's not intended to be a factual statement!
Where's that Freeper talent for seeing Black as White, and Up as Down?

i would listen to a libtard about movie quality about as often as i would about their GOP presidential picks

Remember “An American Carol?”
Sounds like the sequel.

Hey! HEY! That film was a cinematic masterpiece! It's still being shown on Showtime, sometimes even before 3:15AM!
To: grundle
Perhaps it was produced shoddily and cheaply on purpose.
?!?!?!?
Bizarre that the Ayn Rand Foundation would permit this to go forward without a decent, updated script and at least one actor with a little more fame than “Bob Beckel’s brother”. Pathetic. I will not be seeing this film.

This is depressing.
Come on, you guys - this is the movie you've all been salivating over for a year at Free Republic!
Doesn't anyone have anything positive to say about it??
To: Bullish

Wooden acting and dialog would capture Ayn Rand nicely. I've tried reading her stuff and they are mostly long winded drags.
That said, I'm going to go see the movie to show my support.

I actually completely agree with that.
I remember thinking that nobody talks like that when reading Atlas Shrugs with the endless 16 sentence run-on paragraphs.

It actually gets worse after that.
More this Monday morning at First Draft.
