The Senate passed a resolution honoring the successful but risky military mission that lead to getting OBL.
The majority GOP House will not follow suit
The decision by GOP leaders follows new rules they enacted in January scrapping the tradition of congratulatory measures, which they complained clogged up the House floor
.
Oh but obviously nevermind on Monday evening the House named two courthouses for Presidents with the last name Bush.
Also forget the cries permeating all night Sunday and all day on Monday "this isn't wasn't the doing of Obama, this was because of our brave SEALS" -
they aren't the Patriots - they are as someone just pointed out in my twitter stream #hatriots
The intent of the new rule was to
prohibit the consideration of any measure that “expresses appreciation, commends, congratulates, celebrates, recognizes the accomplishments of, or celebrates the anniversary of, an entity, event, group, individual, institution, team or government program; or acknowledges or recognizes a period of time for such purposes.”
Republicans had previously said the practice of officially congratulating sports teams and designating days, weeks and months for the awareness of various issues had gotten out of hand
In my opinion the intent of this was to keep Congressional actions from being taken on a Water Polo Championship, every member of Congress passing a resolution honoring the local Pop Warner team or Little League champion. This new rule should have an exception for a unique once in a lifetime military action which exemplifies the bravery of our troops.
The GOP wraps themselves in the flag and dons their flag pins every opportunity but chooses to avoid a simple measure of gratitude in this very risky undertaking.
We are talking about a Senate that passed their resolution 97-0 and was accompanied by very appropriate non-partisan remarks such as the following
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Senate was voting on the resolution “not as two parties, not even as 100 senators, but as one body, representing one grateful country.”
As our friend Mooncat at Left in Alabama said
Inflexibility is the mark of extremism -- Boehner, Cantor and Ryan are taking themselves way too seriously for their own good.
So the President doesn't deserve credit in the eyes of the GOP - but when it comes time to offer praise for those that will hold a special place in American history they don't want to give them any credit either.
What a shame - the Hatriots can't give credit where credit is due - they just gotta keep on Hating
