In recent days reports of US helicopter attacks in Afghanistan have possibly killed up to 52 civilians including many women and children. The so-called insurgents are nearly all residents of Afghanistan. They live there, they were born there. This is mostly an internal Afghan conflict.
The way for the United States to stop killing Afghan children is for President Obama to order a cessation of US military action there.
President Obama needs to show true moral leadership and do the right thing. The embedded corporate-military alliance in our government will howl and try and retaliate against the president if he chooses to unequivocally end our military actions there.
Our president should know he would have the backing of most Americans.
"See they aren't Taliban"
In the southern province of Helmland NATO airstrikes are said to have killed 14 civilians.
BBC
A group from Sera Cala village travelled to Helmand's capital, Lashkar Gah, bringing with them the bodies of eight dead children, some as young as two years old, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul.
"See, they aren't Taliban," they chanted as the carried the corpses to local journalists and the governor's mansion.
From the
AFP:
Aslam, a local elder of Nawzad district, told AFP he "lost 12 relatives while 10 others including children were injured" in the air strike.
And in the north-eastern province of Nuristan:
Separately the governor of Nuristan on Sunday told AFP that 18 civilians and 20 police were killed by "friendly fire" during US-led air strikes against insurgents in his troubled northeastern province.
Nuristan was the scene of heavy battles last week between the Taliban and Afghan security forces. The police and civilians were targeted on Wednesday after they were mistaken for militants, Jamaluddin Badr said.
The children are Afghanistan's greatest resource, for they are truly its future.
Let's hope President Obama takes action that only the president can and end our hostilities there.
