Let me make it clear up front that I'm speaking to a very small minority of people who visit this site.
Tracy Morgan had every right to say what he said in Nashville. You have every right to defend him. I support freedom of speech with every fiber of my liberal being. But understand this, free speech is a two way street. When the Tracy Morgan's of this planet verbally abuse my brothers and sisters I'm going to use my power of free speech right back. You may think that it is within your power to intimidate LGBT people into being silent and invisible. But it isn't. Things have changed. The tables have turned. We have found our voice and we will be silent no longer. If you don't like it, too bad so sad.
We don't have to be silent any longer because of this...
Stonewall riots
...and this...
Compton's Cafeteria riots
...and this man...
Harvey Milk
...and this woman...
Ellen Degeneres
...and this man...
Senator Barney Frank
...and this woman...
Wanda Sykes
...and in his own way, this man...
Ted Haggard
...and for a thousand other reasons but most of all because we are finally winning our battles because of this beautiful document...
If this needs captioning then you are beyond hope
This flag may look all peaceful and perhaps even a little silly to you...
...but this is our banner and it means something to us. It unites us and reminds us that if we stand together and exercise our own power of free speech we can effect change.
So when you hijack our dignity for a cheap punch line, we will speak up and say "Oh no you didn't". You can complain and call us the thought police or the word police or your favorite insult, politically correct. We won't be silenced. You may still be getting cheers and laughs in some club in Nashville, but you won't be filling stadiums any time soon. Those days are over. Your children don't get your jokes and find you lame. Soon the crowd will completely stop applauding and will all go home. I hope that my exercising my right to free speech will hasten that day.
I feel for you in a way. It sucks to be in a minority.
