Yesterday we had a diary that said $1044 X 0.4% = $0.14. Today we have a diary that says $1044 X 0.4% = $0.42.
Yesterday's diary argued that a change to the index for calculating Social Security COLAs would be no big deal because the average change would only amount to 14 cents per month. Today's diary rebuts that by saying that the change is 42 cents, not 14 cents and furthermore when the difference is compounded year by year it amounts to big bucks. Well, it's bigger bucks than either of those authors discussed.
I have done the math and checked it twice. $1044 X 0.4% = $4.17. Saying the same thing in English rather than math speak, one thousand forty four dollars multiplied by four tenths of a percent equals four dollars and seventeen cents (or eighteen cents if you round up.)
The point made in todays diary is valid. It would be even stronger if the right numbers were used. It is hard to have a credible discussion about an issue if we can't get the math right.
Attempts to get the diary corrected by posting a comment have not been successful. Maybe this will work.
