...I've stayed Hyatt Hotels many many times.
But my 4th of July weekend stay, earlier this month, will be my last.
According to weather.com downtown Chicago has heat index of 111 today. Today is the hottest day in the last six years (this has been the hottest decade so far)
But when Hyatt workers walked off the job, to protest working conditions and and started picketing, their employer turned on 10 heaters meant for Chicago's very chilly/windy winters.
Even if you aren't a huge supporter of unions (and I'm not the biggest one out there, trust me) this is inhumane:
The main entrance of an upscale hotel in downtown Chicago was sweltering Thursday morning — and not just because of the rising sun or the week’s heat wave. As pickets marched under the Park Hyatt’s glass awning, the inn switched on 10 heat lamps installed to warm guests in the dead of winter.
Are they trying to prove how truly bad the working conditions are?
I am seriously worried about our "civilization." We have not only lost common decency, we have lost the ability for empathy.
Our TV shows us constant scenes of torture, justifying giving pain to other human beings on the mere suspicion that the person being tortured has committed a crime. Forget "24" . . . . . Non-terrorism related TV shows like "The Event" "CSI:Miami" and "Combat Hospital" have shown torture being done to get information. Without even hinting that normal people find this objectionable.
Our news tells everyone that there is no consequence for torturing people.
And now, we have no problem torturing our own neighbors. People we see every freaking day???? I'm sure the person who turned on the heater, saw and talked to those people just yesterday. He knows they are human beings, with children, with fears, and hopes, and diseases. He knows how hot it is outside.
Hyatt, have you no shame?
I will never stay at a Hyatt until they apologize to these workers and fire the guy who turned on the heaters.
Again -- full disclosure -- I am not a union member, just someone who reads the news.
