I decided to write Congressman Schweikert (R-AZ-05) about the debt ceiling crisis despite the inevitable frustration that will result. I basically asked him not to shoot the hostage and I did it in the most harsh way a polite letter can. This is because he has voted a straight wingnut record since he was voted into office. The only reason I even sent it is that perhaps being counted as being related to someone in his necessary demographic (my mom lives in the same CD) maybe constituents missing Social Security checks plus his background in predatory finance may convince him that a default isn't in his best interest. The letter after the jump.
Representative Schweikert,
I know any talk of backing off of the current negotiating position on the debt ceiling is going to be met with a condescending lecture about how tying up passage of a one sentence bill needs for something that certainly can't happen by Aug. 2 is being done for some altruistic reason or how this debt ceiling increase is somehow worse than 13 increases under President Reagan.
I also know that you can't possibly give me any answer to my satisfaction because your negotiating stance requires a poker face.
However, you should be made aware that my 70 year old mother probably voted for you (I didn't really ask because she would have felt bad) despite my protestations and my entreaties that she vote for Congressman Mitchell. Therefore, I ask that you not think of my student loans (which aren't much and don't matter to you since I'm in a demographic that would under no circumstances vote for you) but think of one of your voters being denied her Social Security check when you make your Aug. 1 voting plans. So even though you can't possibly tell me that you are voting for the inevitable clean bill on Aug. 1 at 11:00 PM, I hope that you do just the same.
Sincerely,
[me]
