Why is it never pointed out that of course our debt is larger than ever for obvious reasons. Our population is now over 310 million people. We have about 4 million square miles of land that has to be serviced with roads, bridges, airports, power grids, water filtration, and other crumbling infrastructure. We are engaged in 3 wars. The price of oil is at an all time high and the richest Americans and corporations are paying taxes at an all time low. What other result could there be?
Yet a small rabid group with allegiance only to the Koch brothers and Grover Norquist are able to frame the entire debate in spite of a "Democratic" President and Senate. What kind of a country are we running here?
As Bernie Sanders so eloquently pointed out, we have a Democratic President, and Democratic Senate and the support of over 70% of the American people wanting to see taxes increased on the wealthiest among us, but once again, it is the middle class, working class, poor, elderly, and disabled that will share the sacrifice as the "job creators" (who have eliminated about a half million jobs since their tax cuts kicked in under GWBush) get a little more incentive to hoard away their money.
Corporate profits are at all time highs. There is a larger gap than ever between the rich and everyone else than we've ever had before, and the unemployment rate is dangerously approaching what it once was during something called the "Great Depression".
Would default really be that much worse than the deal agreed to? The urgency in fighting against default seems only so important because then we would have to actually see "shared" sacrifice, and we can't do anything to interfere with the comfort of the wealthy in this country.
We constantly hear The Republican phrase, "We don't have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem" going unchallenged. But if you ask any American family (or any other country for that matter) if having more money would help solve their budget problems, I dare challenge that not a single person would say no. Yet the spending over revenue statements from Republicans constantly goes unchallenged.
This president and altogether too many of our elected representatives have turned "HOPE" into despair and they still show no signs of having a backbone to fight for the American people.
